Welcome to the New Zealand Branch of MLAANZ
MLAANZ New Zealand Branch Committee Members 2010
RECENT EVENTS
Queen's Birthday Honours to Justice Williams
Members of the NZ Branch were very pleased to learn recently that Justice Hugh Williams has been appointed to the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queens Birthday Honours 2010 for services as a Judge. Justice Williams' enthusiasm and long standing interest in maritime law has been a source of great pride for the Association, and his contributions to the Association have been extremely valuable and welcome. The NZ Branch is planning an evening later in the year to celebrate Justice Williams’ appointment and further details will be available shortly.
2010 Melbourne Conference
It is expected that a number of members will travel to Melbourne for the 2010 Federal Conference to be hosted by the Melbourne Branch of MLAANZ. There are five speakers from NZ over the two day conference including Paul Myburg of the University of Auckland and Catherine Taylor, the Director of Maritime New Zealand. A very interesting programme has been prepared and there will be papers of interest to a wide section of the NZ members. Your attendance therefore in Melbourne is strongly encouraged. In addition, there is an on-the-water rowing event planned at the conference with the NZ members expected to put on a strong show and defend NZ’s strong tradition of Trans Tasman success.
NZ Branch Conference – Taupo 2011
Planning is underway for the 2011 NZ Branch conference, this year to be held at the Hilton in Taupo on Friday, 8th April 2011. This is a weekend more in line with the historical dates over which the conference has been held, and it is expected that there will be a large attendance at this attractive venue centrally located in Taupo. For those who like to plan in advance, please note your diaries and leave that date free. If you have ideas for topics please let us know.
Marine Insurance Act 1908 Annual Celebration
The now annual tradition of celebrating the 100 year enactment into NZ law of the Marine Insurance Act 1908 is always a strongly attended gathering and a good chance to meet up with a wide cross section of the Association’s members. The date has changed slightly from previously notified and will now be held on Wednesday 18 August. The first venue for the evening will be the Northern Steamship Bar, Quay Street, commencing at 5, so mark your diaries.
Maritime New Zealand MOSS Proposals
Maritime NZ have given notice of their intention to implement a new system for maritime operator safety to be known as MOSS. A comprehensive briefing package and an invitation to make submissions is available on the Maritime NZ website, www.maritimenz.govt.nz. Members are encouraged to make themselves familiar with Maritime NZ’s proposals.
Case Law
For up-to-date access on NZ maritime case law and legislation relating to maritime law, members are reminded that they are invited to subscribe to the NZ Maritime Law Updating Service run by Paul Myburg of the University of Auckland. His website is www.maritimelaw.org.nz.
Website Prize
The Federal committee of MLAANZ have recently announced that a prize will be offered for the regional branch of MLAANZ which has the best website page. Members are therefore encouraged to send contributions, information, news, any matter of interest to other members, photographs of social events or maritime events suitable for general publication in order to utilise this branch’s website as effectively and informatively as possible. The prize is a case of wine so there is a fine incentive available.
